I'm also concerned that the open work stitch, if not knitted tightly enough, will stretch with wear. Perhaps you'd have better luck looking for a Big Wool pattern in straight stockinette stitch, which would give the garment more structure. I too have lost my knitting mojo and am looking to get it back with a baby blanket - yarn due to arrive in the post today. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. My big chunky cardigan looked similar to yours when I held it against me, but the armholes weren't quite so low once it was sewn together, so fingers crossed that it turns out ok! I usually find that the change in surface means that my tension alters, and this can often do the trick when a certain yarn is being recalcitrant with regard to gauge.
