I definitely owe you some knitting eyecandy 😀
How about this?
This is the fabulous Sea Glass Sweater by Wool & Pine. Made between Jan and March 2022.
It is a wonderfully inventive top down pattern made entirely of 1×1 fairisle, changing both colours every row. It’s intended as a stashbuster to use up all those DK odds and ends. I used 4ply held with lace weight too.
I had seen the pattern on Instagram and was swatched and ready to go the day the pattern was released – I’m not usually that fired up about new patterns.
When you buy this pattern, you are given access to a collection of video tutorials for evey aspect – how to deal with the ends, how to choose your size, how to match the sleeves, how to make these cute swatches and more.
Here’s my first swatches, playing with colour combos and tension…
The bottom swatch was an experiment with Rowan Felted Tweed – unanimously the Guilty Knitters and Ben voted that it looked fuddy-duddy and they all liked my grey, purple, pinks better.
The grey and purples, eventually done on 5mm needles to get gauge, were from this unpromising heap of old tat I dragged from the back of my stash…
The Purple grey, used for the ribbing, is left over from a jumper I made for Ben. Too many other old projects represented here to name.
Pixie was fascinated – she was always on hand for some colour consultation – usually sitting on the next ball of yarn I needed and refusing to move…
I could not put this down – it was addictive to knit. I quickly had a yoke…
And was ready to split for the sleeves…
Because I’m deeply uncomfortable with things that don’t match (!) I decided to do a row on each sleeve as I completed a row on the body. This way I could make sure I didn’t run out of yarn and I’d always know what two yarns I had used for that particular row.
The only problem with this approach is you end up with three sets of circular needles waggling around. It was akin to squid wrestling!
Here’s Pixie, trying to subdue the writhing beast…
And a shot without Furry helper in the way!
You can see the colour distribution I chose playing out here now.
I’ve used Orange/Pink/Cream in sequence every few rows to make the blend of colours cohesive.
All the rest of the lilacs, grays, browns, blacks are chosen at random as “filler”, trying to get a light and a dark on each row.
In case you are wondering the ends are dealt with using “Magic Knot”. A method of tying a very secure knot and cutting all the ends off 😮 I found this tutorial very helpful: https://raffamusadesigns.com/how-to-join-yarn-with-the-magic-knot/
Getting to the ends of the sleeves was a slog, but worth it – I was happy my sleeves matched!
So here she is, finished in all her stash busting glory…
There are 100s of beautiful interpretations of this pattern on Ravelry and Instagram – The only limit is your imagination and the size of your stash!

Oh I have just been eyeing up this pattern? I made shifty a couple of years ago and hated every minute of the slip stitch. Is this normal stocking stitch? Yours is beautiful
Hi Arianwen 🙂 Yes, all stocking stitch in the round. Each row is 1×1 fairisle – no slipstitches – I hold one colur in each hand and do both colours in one row. Thanks for the compliments!
Is it 4ply? It may well be about to join the queue!
No not 4ply, it’s DK but you can use 4ply with a laceweigtht strand to thicken it up. There is a 4ply version for a tee on Wool & Pine’s site too 😉
This sweater is on my ‘to knit’ list but I’m not sure about all those magic knots! Are they obvious or do they hide themselves among the busy pattern?
