Guilty Knitters. Our Sunday morning knitting group are trying that name on for size this week, having decided we all now hate “Naughty Knitters”…we’re not naughty! Twas a silly name!!
We do all, however, have an internal list of reasons to feel guilt about our knitting. I bet all of you readers can tick at least 3 of these!!
- Too much time spent knitting
- Child/Husband/Partner/Cat neglect because No. 1
- Not enough time spent knitting
- Abandoned lonely projects left untended and uncared for. Possibly shoved under the bed or behind the sofa
- Too many WIPS
- Spotting a mistake and not going back to correct it
- Obsessively correcting mistakes that really won’t show
- Stash shame
- Money spent on yarn and gadgets
- Infrequent blogging 😳
- Too much time reading knitting blogs and forums
- Ignoring all good advice and refusing to Swatch
- Forcing loved ones to wear your creations even if they turned out a little wonky

what about the garments in the closet we thought would make us look like the blonde in the photo? – gray, blonde, what’s the difference? Yes, perhaps being pint-sized would effect the look of that super- bulky yarn….(the model was probably of Amazon proportions)
Er, I think I ticked all 13 actually *looks guilty*
I feel liked I’ve reached my spiritual home, guilt is the result of being a decent human being with a responsible mature adult. Somehow there is always something that I “should” be doing rather than knitting but hey knitting is good, knitting is fun, knitting is creative and knitting is healing. I enjoy it (most of the time) so heres to the newly named Guilty Knitters. Jane ps. what about the guilt around the amount of money some of us (no names mentioned) spend on frothy coffees whilst knitting!!
Guilty of all as charged…me Lord………ahhh!!!! the torment.
oh no I am guilty of all except obsessively correcting mistakes. Which is probably the only one I should be guilty of!
More guilt:
– 8.1 – Stash shame due to sheer quantity accumulated
– 8.2 – Buying yarn you don’t even like because it was on sale
– 8.3 – Telling your kids you had no time to shop for gifts from the exotic places you went to, even though you found time to visit the local yarn store (*blush*)
– 8.4 – Deliberately not checking credit card statements in case it stops you buying more yarn
– 8.5 – When your perfectly lovely mother asks for two balls of ‘nice’ sock yarn, you only give her two balls of stuff you don’t like
And:
14 – Making things you really don’t like as gifts for friends, just because you wanted to have a go at the pattern and you’d rather lumber someone else with the FO than wear it yourself
15 – Becoming a yarn snob
16 – Feeling judgmental about other people’s choice of projects. Last year I was on a quest to locate some Rowan Cotton Tape, long discontinued. I found a woman online talking about her use of the exact shades I wanted. She announced: “I have been crocheting belts with it”. Crochet! Belts! In the name of good yarn, WHY? I wanted the local police to go round to her house and seize the yarn (and then bring it to me).
Guilty.

Reasons NOT to feel guilty: (1) Did Picasso buy just enough paint for one picture at a time? I think not. (2) How may unfinished WIPs does an artist have for every “masterpiece.”? (3) Does your husband/significant other play golf? And how much does that cost per hour of entertainment? More than yarn, I would guess. And if all that doesn’t work: (4) It should be the worst thing you have on your conscience!
Ahh guilt heaven.
I confess to
1.Wishing winter would get her more quickly so I can justify not dusting, not enough daylight. = More knitting time.
2.Not gardening too wet/cold. = More knitting time.
3. Having to knit all day – Christmas presents to finish. Means I can knit as soon as Dh leaves for work.
4. Eating out of the freezer….more cash to spend on yarn plus time save not having to shop. = More knitting time.
oh-god! I’ve ticked the LOT! what does that make me? gulp? naughty AND guilty! can I join your group? where will I find you? on the naughty step in the naughty corner! lol!! (there IS cake! though? to see us through all this guilt?) love it! Sue xxx
Too funny – started knitting again after a long absence about a year ago! My grandfather was from London and I am named Susan Crowe! Just couldn’t resist. My Ravelry name is Blackjacksrunner. He’s my racing labrador retriever. Your projects are amazing and in inspiration.
My grandfather sang in the choir at Westminster. They lost the family housing there when his voice changed and wound up in America. Just in case this sounds at all familiar. I think the E on the end was a late addon.

We meet in Bromley in the Glades shopping center at the Starbucks on the first floor (besides Hobbs) at 10:00ish each Sunday morning until about 12:30. No joining fees or obligations to come every week – just turn up with your knitting and say, “Hi”.
(Only slight rule is that it’s an adult group with adult conversations,occasional rude words and sharp pointy things laying around so we prefer no children please)
