I promised to show you my first Sorrel, made with Yarn for the Soul’s light fingering in 2021.
Fell in love with the “Midnight is a Lonely Place” colourway as it reminded me of Van Gogh’s Starry Night (just been to an immersive Van Gogh exhibition!!) – Can you see what I was seeing?
Most people made Sorrel with 3 or 4 different balls of fingering yarn and kept the mohair the same throughout. Because I have over 200 balls of Kidsilk Haze (Yes, I really do!), I played with changing the KSH.
Colours were selected and swatches made….
I was amazed how radically the KSH changed the base yarn. I got off to a false start, using some orange KSH – it completely overpowered the loveliness of the fingering yarn.
Pixie didn’t like it either…
I kept a cool pallet and went blue/grey, blue, purple, black in KSH (one ball of each from stash)
Knitting the yoke is the fun part. You get access to some great videos on exactly how to make the dip stitch. Very easy once you have been shown.
You quickly end up with an attractive hat…
I mean yoke!!!
The body and sleeves are in reverse stocking stitch, but to save on the purling, you knit these parts inside out in knit stitches. Huge relief!
The fade between the changing colours is laid out over 20 rows. It’s quite a pain to do. Great if you really want to use up clashing oddments but I’d think twice about this type of fade again. I think I should have stuck with the blue/grey throughout with hindsight.
I think I made it a size to small too. The sleeves are quite snug on me. I keep forgetting I’ve gained a lot of weight over the couple of years 😕
All that said and done – A really enjoyable knit – completed in under a month. I do wear it a lot too.
You really just want to see finished pictures don’t you? Here you go!
Completed Knit Report | |
Name: | Sorrel |
Pattern: | Sorrel by Wool and Pine |
Yarn: | Yarn for the Soul’s light fingering in “Midnight is a Lonely Place” and 4 balls of Rowan Kidsilk Haze, Eclipse and Night. |
Pattern Problems: | Had to massively size up needles to get gauge – I think this is partly because it’s written by a continental style knitter and I knit (tightly) English style. Even with correct gauge it came up a bit small with tight arms – with hindsight I should have knit the 3rd and not the 2nd size. |
Pattern Modifications: | None, other than fading the KSH and not the fingering |
Washing and Wearing: | Very lovely and surprisingly warm to wear. Can throw on over any ratty tshirt and look glamourous. |
Knit It Again???: | Well, I have haven’t I?! |
Difficulty: | Medium. |
Rating: | 5/5 Really enjoyed this and learned a few things too |
